The Making of a Hero
Kate Bishop first appeared in Young Avengers #1 (April 2005), created by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung. Born into wealth as the daughter of a publishing magnate, Kate's privileged life was shattered when she was assaulted in Central Park. Rather than become a victim, she channeled her trauma into becoming a hero, training in archery, fencing, and martial arts.
When the Young Avengers formed in the wake of Avengers Disassembled, Kate joined despite having no superpowers. She proved herself invaluable, eventually earning the Hawkeye name and bow from Captain America himself after the original Clint Barton's apparent death. When Clint returned, he acknowledged Kate as his equal, and both have shared the Hawkeye identity since.
What sets Kate apart is her refusal to be defined by her trauma or her privilege. She's confident without being arrogant, skilled without being superhuman, and heroic without being preachy. Her partnership with Clint Barton in Matt Fraction's acclaimed "Hawkeye" series (2012-2015) is considered one of the best comic runs of the decade.
