The Immortal Mutant Warrior

Wolverine first appeared in Incredible Hulk #180 (cameo) and #181 (full appearance) in 1974, created by Len Wein, John Romita Sr., and Herb Trimpe. Originally a Canadian government agent, he was recruited by Professor X for the "All-New, All-Different" X-Men in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975). That team—including Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus—revitalized the X-Men franchise.

Logan's past is shrouded in mystery and trauma. Born James Howlett in the 1880s, his mutant powers manifested when bone claws emerged from his hands. He's lived through both World Wars, been experimented on by the Weapon X program (which bonded adamantium to his skeleton), and lost his memories multiple times. His healing factor has kept him alive for over a century, but it's also meant watching everyone he loves die.

Despite his gruff exterior and violent tendencies, Wolverine has a code of honor. He's been an X-Man, an Avenger, a teacher at the Jean Grey School, and a father figure to young mutants like Kitty Pryde, Jubilee, and X-23 (his female clone who has taken up the Wolverine mantle). His rivalry with Sabretooth and his complicated relationship with Jean Grey are legendary storylines.
