The Mighty God of Thunder
Thor first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 (August 1962), created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. Based on the Norse god of the same name, Thor was initially Donald Blake, a doctor who found a walking stick that transformed into the hammer Mjolnir. Later stories revealed that Blake was always Thor, with his memories suppressed by Odin to teach him humility.
Thor's mythology is rich and complex—his father Odin, his brother Loki, his home Asgard, the Nine Realms, Ragnarok (the cyclical destruction and rebirth of the gods). He's wielded Mjolnir, Stormbreaker, and even the Odinforce. He's been an Avenger since the team's founding, a king of Asgard, and a Herald of Galactus. His worthiness to wield Mjolnir has been tested countless times.
The character has evolved significantly over the decades. Jason Aaron's epic run (2012-2019) introduced Jane Foster as Thor, explored Thor's unworthiness, and culminated in the War of the Realms. Thor Odinson has been a warrior, a king, a father, and always a hero. His power is nearly limitless when he taps into his full potential.
