From War Machine to Iron Patriot
James Rhodes first appeared in Iron Man #118 (January 1979), created by David Michelinie, John Byrne, and Bob Layton. As Tony Stark's military liaison and closest friend, Rhodey has been part of Iron Man's story from nearly the beginning. He's worn multiple armors over the years, most notably War Machine, but the Iron Patriot identity represents his role as America's armored defender.
The Iron Patriot armor was originally worn by Norman Osborn during his Dark Reign, a perversion of both Iron Man and Captain America's legacies. When Rhodey adopted the identity, he reclaimed it for heroism. The red, white, and blue color scheme symbolizes his dedication to protecting his country through legitimate means.
