Legacy of the Ebony Blade
Dane Whitman first appeared as the heroic Black Knight in Avengers #47 (December 1967), created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. He inherited the mantle from his villainous uncle Nathan Garrett, determined to redeem the Black Knight name. His connection to Sir Percy of Scandia, the original Black Knight of Camelot, adds mythological depth to his character.
The Ebony Blade is both Dane's greatest weapon and his greatest curse. Forged by Merlin from a meteorite, the sword can cut through virtually anything and makes its wielder nearly invulnerable. However, it also carries a blood curse—the more it kills, the more it corrupts its wielder. Dane's constant struggle against this corruption defines his heroism.
As an Avenger, Dane has served across multiple eras and incarnations of the team. His romance with Sersi of the Eternals connected him to cosmic mythology, while his time with Excalibur explored his Arthurian roots. He represents the intersection of science and magic, modernity and legend.

MCU: Kit Harington's Dane Whitman
Kit Harington introduced Dane Whitman in Eternals (2021), though primarily as Sersi's human boyfriend rather than the Black Knight. The post-credits scene teased his transformation, showing him about to grasp the Ebony Blade while an off-screen voice (Blade's Mahershala Ali) warned him against it. This setup promises significant future appearances.
Harington's casting—fresh off Game of Thrones where he wielded Longclaw—was clearly intentional. The Black Knight's medieval aesthetic and cursed sword storyline fit perfectly with his established screen presence. His connection to both the Eternals and potentially Blade opens multiple narrative pathways in the MCU.
INVESTMENT ALERT: Black Knight cards are prime MCU speculation targets. Kit Harington's star power, the Eternals connection, and the Blade tease create significant upside. Avengers #47 has seen renewed interest since his MCU introduction.
