From Villain to Hero to Star
Wonder Man first appeared in Avengers #9 (October 1964), created by Stan Lee and Don Heck. Simon Williams was an industrialist whose company was driven to bankruptcy by competition with Tony Stark. Desperate, he accepted Baron Zemo's offer to undergo ionic energy treatments, gaining incredible powers but becoming dependent on Zemo for survival.
Sent to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers, Simon had a change of heart and sacrificed himself to save them. He was believed dead for years until his ionic energy form reconstituted. This redemption arc—from desperate villain to noble hero—became central to his character. His "death" and resurrection have become recurring themes.
In a unique twist, Simon's brain patterns were recorded before his first death and used by Ultron to create the Vision's personality matrix. This makes Simon and Vision "brothers" of a sort, a relationship that has been explored in numerous storylines. Simon later pursued an acting career in Hollywood, adding another dimension to his character.
