AGENT HILLMARIA HILL
The woman who held S.H.I.E.L.D. together when Nick Fury went underground. Maria Hill rose through the ranks to become Deputy Director and eventually Director of the world's premier intelligence agency. Pragmatic, by-the-book, and fiercely competent, she's clashed with Avengers and saved them in equal measure. Cobie Smulders brought her to life across multiple MCU films.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Iron Lady
Maria Hill first appeared in New Avengers #4 (April 2005), created by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch. She was introduced as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. following Nick Fury's disappearance after the Secret War. Her appointment was controversial—she was seen as a government loyalist rather than a Fury-style independent operator.
Hill's tenure as Director coincided with the Superhuman Registration Act and Civil War. She initially supported registration and clashed with Captain America, but her loyalty was always to doing what she believed was right for global security. After Civil War, she served under Tony Stark when he became Director, then resumed leadership after his departure.
Her relationship with the Avengers has been complicated. She's ordered them around, fought alongside them, and sometimes worked against them when she believed they were wrong. This complexity makes her one of Marvel's most nuanced supporting characters—neither pure ally nor antagonist.

MCU: Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill
Cobie Smulders portrayed Maria Hill across nine MCU appearances, from The Avengers (2012) through Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Her Hill was Nick Fury's trusted second-in-command, often serving as the face of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Fury operated from the shadows.
The MCU version softened some of Hill's comic book edges, making her more of a straightforward ally to the Avengers. Her appearances in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. expanded her role, showing her navigating the agency's collapse after HYDRA's infiltration was revealed. Her fate in the post-Endgame MCU remains open.
INVESTMENT ALERT: Maria Hill cards benefit from established MCU presence and potential future appearances. New Avengers #4 (first appearance) is a modern key with room for growth. Her role in any future S.H.I.E.L.D. or Secret Invasion follow-up could boost interest.
