The Eternal Watchman
Heimdall first appeared in Journey into Mystery #85 (October 1962), created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby as part of the Thor mythology. Based on the Norse god Heimdallr, he was reimagined as the guardian of the Rainbow Bridge (Bifrost) connecting Asgard to the other Nine Realms.
In Norse mythology, Heimdall is destined to blow the Gjallarhorn to signal Ragnarök and ultimately die in mutual combat with Loki. Marvel's version maintains his role as Asgard's first line of defense, possessing senses so acute he can hear grass growing and see across dimensions. His golden armor and massive sword Hofund are iconic.
Heimdall's unwavering duty has occasionally put him at odds with Thor and Odin when he believes their actions endanger Asgard. This moral complexity—loyalty to realm versus loyalty to rulers—has driven several significant storylines. He's one of the few beings Thor trusts absolutely.

MCU: Idris Elba's Heimdall
Idris Elba portrayed Heimdall across five MCU films: Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).
