Trapped in a World He Never Made

Howard the Duck first appeared in Adventure into Fear #19 (December 1973), created by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik. Originally a throwaway character in a Man-Thing story, Howard's cynical personality and absurdist humor resonated with readers. He quickly received his own series, which became one of the most acclaimed and controversial comics of the 1970s.

Steve Gerber used Howard as a vehicle for social satire, lampooning everything from politics to religion to the comics industry itself. The duck's famous tagline—"Trapped in a world he never made"—captured the alienation many readers felt. Howard even ran for President in 1976, receiving actual write-in votes.

Howard's world is Duckworld, a planet in an alternate dimension where ducks are the dominant intelligent species. He was transported to Earth by the demon Thog and has been stuck here ever since, dealing with everything from vampires to cosmic entities while maintaining his sardonic outlook on human (and superhuman) foolishness.
