EGOTHE LIVING PLANET
A planet with a face. A god with a world for a body. Ego is one of Marvel's most unique cosmic entities—a sentient planet with godlike powers and an ego to match his name. In the MCU, Kurt Russell portrayed him as Star-Lord's father, a Celestial whose grand plan threatened all life in the universe. His defeat remains one of the Guardians' greatest victories.

The Bioverse
Ego the Living Planet first appeared in Thor #132 (September 1966), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby during their legendary run on the title. Ego was one of Kirby's most imaginative creations—a planet-sized being with a humanoid face on its surface, capable of manipulating its entire mass as an extension of its will.
In the comics, Ego's origin varies. One version claims he was created when a scientist merged with a planet during the Big Bang. Another suggests he's a surviving member of an ancient race of living planets. Regardless of origin, Ego is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, capable of consuming entire civilizations.
Ego has clashed with Thor, the Fantastic Four, and various cosmic heroes over the decades. His most significant storyline involved Galactus attempting to consume him—two planet-sized entities in cosmic combat. The Rigellians eventually convinced Ego to serve as a refuge for displaced peoples, though his nature makes him an unreliable ally.

MCU: Kurt Russell's Celestial Father
Kurt Russell portrayed Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), reimagined as a Celestial rather than a living planet of unknown origin. This version was Peter Quill's biological father, who seduced Meredith Quill as part of his plan to spread his consciousness across the universe—a plan called "The Expansion."
Russell's Ego was charming, manipulative, and ultimately monstrous—revealing he had killed Meredith when she became a distraction. His defeat came when the Guardians destroyed his brain (his "core"), with Groot planting a bomb while Peter held him off using his inherited Celestial powers. Ego's death meant Peter lost his cosmic abilities.
INVESTMENT ALERT: Ego cards benefit from Kurt Russell's memorable MCU portrayal and the character's unique visual design. Thor #132 (first appearance) is a significant Silver Age key. While Ego is deceased in the MCU, his connection to Star-Lord and the Celestials maintains collector interest. Multiverse possibilities exist.
