The Original Five
Angel first appeared in X-Men #1 (September 1963), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as one of Professor Xavier's original five students alongside Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, and Iceman. Warren's mutation manifested as large, feathered wings capable of flight—a power that made him appear literally angelic.
Born into extreme wealth as heir to the Worthington fortune, Warren's privileged background set him apart from many mutants who faced poverty and persecution. His good looks and charming personality made him a natural leader and public face for the X-Men. He dated Jean Grey before she became involved with Cyclops.
Warren's life changed forever during the Mutant Massacre when the Marauders severely damaged his wings. Rather than live without flight, he attempted suicide—but was saved and transformed by Apocalypse into Archangel, the Horseman of Death. His feathered wings were replaced with razor-sharp metal ones, and his personality became darker and more violent.

Live-Action: X-Men Films
Angel has appeared in multiple X-Men films with varying prominence. Ben Foster played Warren Worthington III in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), where his father developed a "mutant cure" partly to "fix" his son. Ben Hardy portrayed a younger, punk-rock version in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), who was transformed into Archangel by the titular villain.
Neither film fully explored Angel's character depth or his significance as an original X-Man. With Marvel Studios now controlling the X-Men rights, a proper MCU introduction could finally do justice to Warren's complex journey from privileged golden boy to tortured anti-hero. The Archangel transformation offers dramatic storytelling potential.
INVESTMENT ALERT: Angel cards benefit from Original Five status and MCU X-Men anticipation. X-Men #1 (first appearance) is one of the most valuable Silver Age keys. His Archangel transformation provides visual variety for card art. Any MCU X-Men announcement would significantly boost interest in founding members.
