The Reformed Villain
The Prowler first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #78 (November 1969), created by Stan Lee and John Buscema. Hobie Brown was a young African-American window washer with a genius for invention. Frustrated by lack of opportunities, he created a costumed identity to commit crimes that would expose security weaknesses—planning to then "catch" himself and become a hero.
His first crime brought him into conflict with Spider-Man, who defeated him but recognized Hobie's potential for good. Rather than turning him over to the police, Peter Parker helped Hobie find legitimate work. This act of faith transformed the Prowler from villain to hero, and he's been one of Spider-Man's most loyal allies ever since.
Hobie has repeatedly helped Peter protect his secret identity, even impersonating Spider-Man while Peter appeared as himself. This trust speaks to the deep friendship between them. The Prowler identity has since been used by others, including Aaron Davis (Miles Morales' uncle), but Hobie remains the original and most heroic version.

Spider-Verse: Multiple Prowlers
The Prowler gained significant mainstream attention through "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" (2018), though that film featured Aaron Davis rather than Hobie Brown. Aaron's tragic role as Miles Morales' uncle who secretly worked for Kingpin introduced the Prowler to millions of new fans.
Hobie Brown himself appeared in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" (2023) as Spider-Punk—an anarchist Spider-Man from an alternate dimension. This punk rock version, voiced by Daniel Kaluuya, became a fan favorite and significantly boosted interest in all versions of Hobie Brown. His anti-establishment attitude and unique visual design made him stand out even among dozens of Spider-variants.
INVESTMENT ALERT: The Prowler cards benefit from Spider-Verse popularity and multiple character versions. Amazing Spider-Man #78 (first appearance) has appreciated significantly since the animated films. Hobie's dual role as Prowler and Spider-Punk creates cross-appeal. Any live-action Spider-Verse content would boost values further.
