Iron Man's Partner
James Rhodes first appeared in Iron Man #118 (January 1979), created by David Michelinie, John Byrne, and Bob Layton. He was introduced as Tony Stark's personal pilot and close friend, a decorated military officer who would become one of Marvel's most important African American heroes.
Rhodey's most significant moment came when Tony Stark's alcoholism left him unable to function as Iron Man. Rhodes donned the armor himself, serving as Iron Man for an extended period in the 1980s. This established him as more than a sidekick—he was a hero in his own right who could carry the mantle when needed.
The War Machine identity came later, when Rhodey received his own specialized armor. Unlike the sleek Iron Man suits, War Machine was designed for military combat—bristling with weapons, painted in gunmetal gray, and built to intimidate. The armor reflected Rhodey's military background and gave him a distinct identity separate from Tony.
