Wakanda's Shield
Okoye first appeared in Black Panther #1 (November 1998) during Christopher Priest's acclaimed run on the series. She was introduced as a member of the Dora Milaje, the elite bodyguards of the Black Panther. The Dora Milaje are recruited from every tribe in Wakanda, trained from childhood to be the deadliest warriors on Earth.
In the comics, Okoye's role evolved from bodyguard to general, leading Wakanda's forces in times of crisis. Her loyalty to the throne—not necessarily to the person sitting on it—creates fascinating moral dilemmas. She has stood against T'Challa when she believed he was wrong, proving her dedication is to Wakanda itself.
The Dora Milaje represent Wakanda's military might, but they're more than soldiers. They're symbols of Wakandan excellence, trained in every form of combat, fluent in multiple languages, and educated in diplomacy. Okoye embodies these ideals—a warrior-diplomat who can end a conflict with words or with her vibranium spear.

MCU: Breakout Star
Danai Gurira's Okoye debuted in "Black Panther" (2018) and immediately became a fan favorite. Her fierce loyalty, dry wit, and incredible action sequences made her stand out in a film full of memorable characters. The scene where she removes her wig during the casino fight became iconic.
Okoye has appeared in "Avengers: Infinity War," "Avengers: Endgame," and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," where she played a central role in Wakanda's response to T'Challa's death. Her character arc—dealing with loss while maintaining her duty—showcased Gurira's dramatic range. A Disney+ series focusing on Okoye and the Dora Milaje is in development.
