The Original Captain Marvel (Sort Of)
Monica Rambeau first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 (1982), created by Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. She was a New Orleans harbor patrol lieutenant who gained her powers after being exposed to extra-dimensional energy. She became the second person to use the Captain Marvel name in Marvel Comics (after Mar-Vell).
Monica's tenure as Captain Marvel was significant—she wasn't just using the name, she earned it. She joined the Avengers and eventually became their leader, one of the few Black women to lead Marvel's premier team. Her leadership during the "Under Siege" storyline, when the Masters of Evil invaded Avengers Mansion, proved her tactical brilliance.
She later gave up the Captain Marvel name (eventually passing it to Carol Danvers) and has since used Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum. Each name change reflected her evolving relationship with her powers and her place in the superhero community. Her journey from harbor patrol to Avengers leader to cosmic hero demonstrates remarkable character growth.

MCU: From WandaVision to The Marvels
Teyonah Parris first appeared as adult Monica Rambeau in "WandaVision" (2021), having been introduced as a child in "Captain Marvel" (2019). The Disney+ series showed Monica gaining her powers by repeatedly passing through Wanda's Hex barrier. Her transformation into a superhero was one of the show's most anticipated moments.
"The Marvels" (2023) fully showcased Monica's powers as she teamed up with Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan. The film explored her complicated feelings about Carol, who was absent during her mother Maria's death. Monica's journey from S.W.O.R.D. agent to cosmic hero mirrors her comic evolution. Her ending in "The Marvels" sets up major future storylines.
