The Man on the Wall
Bucky Barnes first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941), created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. He was Steve Rogers' teenage sidekick during World War II, fighting alongside Captain America against the Nazis. For decades, Bucky was one of the few characters in comics who stayed dead—his death was considered a defining tragedy of Captain America's story.
Ed Brubaker's 2005 storyline "Winter Soldier" changed everything. It revealed that Bucky had survived, been found by the Soviets, and transformed into a brainwashed assassin. The Winter Soldier was a legend—a ghost who had shaped history from the shadows for decades. This reinvention is considered one of the greatest retcons in comic history.
After breaking free from his programming, Bucky took up the Captain America mantle when Steve Rogers was believed dead. His time as Captain America proved he was worthy of the shield, though he struggled with guilt over his actions as the Winter Soldier. His journey from sidekick to villain to hero represents one of comics' most complete character arcs.

MCU: Sebastian Stan's Defining Role
Sebastian Stan first appeared as Bucky in "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011) and has since appeared in more MCU films than almost any other actor. His transformation from Steve's best friend to the Winter Soldier in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014) provided one of the franchise's most emotional reveals.
"The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" (2021) gave Bucky his most significant character development, showing him making amends for his past while supporting Sam Wilson's journey to becoming Captain America. His therapy scenes and the revelation of his "amends list" added depth to his redemption arc. Stan's contract and popularity ensure Bucky's continued MCU presence.
INVESTMENT ALERT: Winter Soldier cards benefit from Sebastian Stan's beloved portrayal and extensive MCU presence. Captain America Comics #1 (first Bucky appearance) is a Golden Age key worth hundreds of thousands. Captain America #6 (2005, Winter Soldier reveal) is the modern key. His Thunderbolts potential adds speculation value.
