Chooser of the Slain
Valkyrie first appeared in Avengers #83 (December 1970), created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. In Norse mythology, the Valkyries were Odin's handmaidens who selected warriors slain in battle to join him in Valhalla. Marvel's Brunnhilde was the leader of these divine warriors, the greatest among them.
In the comics, Brunnhilde's history is complex. She was trapped in various mortal hosts for centuries before regaining her true form. She became a founding member of the Defenders, fighting alongside Doctor Strange, Hulk, and Namor. Her warrior's code and Asgardian honor made her a natural leader.
The Valkyries themselves have a tragic history—Hela slaughtered them in battle, leaving Brunnhilde as the sole survivor in the MCU. This trauma informed her character's initial reluctance to be a hero. Her journey from grief-stricken exile to King of Asgard represents one of the MCU's most satisfying character arcs.

MCU: Tessa Thompson's Breakout Role
Tessa Thompson debuted as Valkyrie in "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017), reimagining the character as a hard-drinking scavenger on Sakaar. Her introduction—drunkenly falling off her ship—immediately established her irreverent charm. The film revealed her tragic backstory: she was the sole survivor of Hela's massacre of the Valkyries.
In "Avengers: Endgame," Valkyrie led the Asgardian refugees in New Asgard (Norway). Thor appointed her King of Asgard before departing with the Guardians. "Thor: Love and Thunder" showed her ruling New Asgard, though she struggled with the bureaucratic aspects of leadership. Her bisexuality was confirmed, making her the MCU's first openly LGBTQ+ superhero.
INVESTMENT ALERT: Valkyrie cards benefit from Tessa Thompson's popularity and King of Asgard status. Avengers #83 (first appearance) is a Bronze Age key. Her LGBTQ+ representation adds cultural significance. Any Thor 5 or New Asgard project would boost values. Strong fan devotion ensures sustained interest.
