Herald of Galactus
Silver Surfer first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966), created by Jack Kirby. He was part of the legendary "Galactus Trilogy" that introduced the world-devouring cosmic entity. Kirby created the Surfer spontaneously, feeling that a being as powerful as Galactus would need a herald. Stan Lee was so impressed that he gave the character a rich backstory.
Norrin Radd was an astronomer on the utopian planet Zenn-La. When Galactus arrived to consume his world, Norrin offered himself as a herald in exchange for sparing his planet. Galactus agreed, transforming Norrin into the Silver Surfer and suppressing his emotions so he could lead Galactus to inhabited worlds without guilt.
When the Surfer arrived on Earth, the blind sculptor Alicia Masters awakened his buried conscience. He turned against Galactus to save humanity, and as punishment, Galactus imprisoned him on Earth with an invisible barrier. This exile lasted years in the comics, during which the Surfer became a philosophical hero, pondering humanity's potential while trapped among them.
