Original X-Man
Iceman first appeared in X-Men #1 (September 1963), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He was the youngest of the original five X-Men, recruited by Professor Xavier alongside Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, and Angel. Initially portrayed as the team's jokester, Bobby Drake's powers seemed relatively simple—he could create ice and snow.
Over decades, writers gradually revealed the true scope of Iceman's abilities. Emma Frost, while possessing Bobby's body, demonstrated powers he had never accessed. It became clear that Bobby had been unconsciously limiting himself due to fear and self-doubt. When he finally embraced his full potential, he could freeze moisture across vast distances, create multiple ice clones, and even survive being shattered by reforming from any available moisture.
In 2015, the time-displaced young Bobby Drake was outed as gay by Jean Grey, leading to the present-day Bobby confronting his own sexuality. This storyline, while controversial in its execution, led to important character development. Bobby's journey of self-acceptance paralleled his journey to accepting his full mutant potential—both required him to stop hiding parts of himself.

Film Appearances and MCU Future
Shawn Ashmore portrayed Iceman in the Fox X-Men films, appearing in "X-Men," "X2," "X-Men: The Last Stand," and "Days of Future Past." While the films showed his ice powers, they never fully explored his Omega-level potential. The famous "ice slide" sequences were fan favorites, but Bobby was often relegated to supporting status.
As an original X-Man, Iceman is guaranteed to appear in the MCU's X-Men. His Omega-level status makes him a potential major player. The MCU could explore his full power set in ways the Fox films never did. His LGBTQ+ identity adds representation value. Whether the MCU continues his coming-out storyline or presents him as already out remains to be seen.
