Centuries of Wisdom
The Ancient One first appeared in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963), created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. In the comics, he was depicted as an elderly Tibetan man who had served as Sorcerer Supreme for over 500 years. He was the one who recognized Stephen Strange's potential and trained him in the mystic arts, transforming an arrogant surgeon into Earth's mystical defender.
The Ancient One's longevity came from drawing power from the Dark Dimension—the same realm ruled by Dormammu. This moral compromise, using dark power for good purposes, added complexity to the character. He wasn't simply a wise mentor but someone who understood that protecting Earth sometimes required difficult choices.
In the comics, the Ancient One eventually died and ascended to a higher plane of existence, occasionally returning to guide Doctor Strange in times of crisis. His legacy lives on through Strange and the other sorcerers he trained, including Baron Mordo (before his turn to villainy) and Wong.
