The Avatar of Vengeance
Moon Knight first appeared in Werewolf by Night #32 (August 1975), created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin. Originally introduced as a villain hunting the Werewolf, he quickly became a hero in his own right. Marc Spector was a mercenary who was betrayed and left for dead at an Egyptian archaeological dig. The moon god Khonshu offered him a second chance: serve as his avatar and dispense vengeance.
What makes Moon Knight unique is his dissociative identity disorder. Marc Spector is the core personality—a violent, traumatized soldier. Steven Grant is a wealthy businessman who funds Moon Knight's operations. Jake Lockley is a cab driver who gathers street-level intelligence. These aren't disguises; they're distinct personalities that Marc genuinely experiences. The question of whether Khonshu is real or a manifestation of Marc's illness remains deliberately ambiguous.
Moon Knight's brutal methods set him apart from other heroes. He doesn't just stop criminals—he punishes them. His all-white costume is deliberately conspicuous; he wants enemies to see him coming. His weapons include crescent darts, truncheons, and anything else at hand. He's been compared to Batman, but Moon Knight is far more willing to cross lines Batman won't.

MCU: Oscar Isaac's Tour de Force
Oscar Isaac's "Moon Knight" (2022) Disney+ series was a revelation. Isaac played all three personalities—Marc, Steven, and Jake—with distinct physicality, accents, and mannerisms. The show didn't shy away from the character's mental health struggles, depicting DID with surprising sensitivity while maintaining the supernatural elements. Ethan Hawke's Arthur Harrow provided a compelling villain, and the Egyptian mythology was gorgeously realized.
The series ended with Marc/Steven accepting their condition and working together, while Jake Lockley remained a mystery—shown only in a post-credits scene executing Harrow on Khonshu's orders. This sets up future appearances where Jake's violent nature could cause conflict. Isaac has expressed enthusiasm for returning, and the character's popularity virtually guarantees more Moon Knight content.
