The Coming of Galactus

Galactus first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The "Galactus Trilogy" (FF #48-50) is considered one of the greatest comic stories ever told. It introduced both Galactus and the Silver Surfer, expanding Marvel's cosmic mythology beyond anything seen before. The story—a god-like being coming to devour Earth, stopped only by his own herald's conscience—was revolutionary.

Galactus was originally Galan, a scientist from the planet Taa in the universe that existed before the Big Bang. When that universe died, Galan merged with the Sentience of the Universe and was reborn as Galactus. He's not a villain in the traditional sense—he's a cosmic necessity, maintaining balance by consuming worlds. His hunger is a curse he cannot escape.

Over the decades, Galactus has been both antagonist and ally. He's fought the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and cosmic heroes, but he's also defended reality against greater threats. In recent comics, he was transformed into the "Lifebringer," using his power to create life rather than destroy it. His heralds—Silver Surfer, Terrax, Nova, Firelord, and others—are among Marvel's most powerful characters.
