The Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing
The Thing first appeared in Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Ben Grimm was a test pilot and college roommate of Reed Richards who agreed to pilot an experimental spacecraft. When cosmic rays bombarded the ship, Ben was transformed into a massive, orange, rock-skinned creature with superhuman strength. Unlike his teammates, whose powers were more subtle, Ben's transformation was total and permanent.
Ben's struggle with his appearance has been central to his character. He's a handsome, athletic man trapped in a monstrous body. He's tried countless times to cure himself, only to fail or choose to remain the Thing to save others. His relationship with Alicia Masters, a blind sculptor who loves him for who he is, has been one of comics' most touching romances.
Despite his gruff exterior and constant complaints, Ben is the heart of the Fantastic Four. He's the one who keeps the family together, who reminds them of their humanity. His catchphrase "It's clobberin' time!" has become iconic, but it's his vulnerability and loyalty that make him truly special. He's not just strong—he's the strongest person you'd ever want as a friend.

MCU: Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Ben Grimm
The Thing has had two previous live-action portrayals: Michael Chiklis in the 2005/2007 Fantastic Four films (practical suit) and Jamie Bell in the 2015 reboot (CGI). Neither film captured the character's full potential. The MCU's "Fantastic Four: First Steps" (2025) will finally give Ben Grimm the treatment he deserves.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach ("The Bear") was cast as Ben Grimm, a choice that excited fans. His ability to convey vulnerability beneath a tough exterior makes him perfect for the role. The MCU will use a combination of practical effects and CGI to bring the Thing to life. His dynamic with the rest of the FF—especially his friendship with Johnny Storm—will be central to the film.
